What is GTFS?

GTFS is an acronym for the General Transit Feed Specification. GTFS defines a common format for public transportation schedules and associated geographic, fare, and service calendar information.

GTFS data is used in many applications that present public transportation information. The data is also analyzed by transportation planners and researchers.

More information about GTFS:

  • The GTFS best practices documentation provides recommended practices for describing public transportation services in the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS).
  • The GTFS-Changes email discussion forum allows developers and agencies to discuss the GTFS format and proposed modifications to the specification.
  • The transit developers email list is a discussion forum for software development in the public transportation space.
  • Many applications provide access to transportation information using GTFS data, from trip planners to accessibility tools.
  • Open data platforms worldwide provide download links for GTFS data for public transportation agencies worldwide, including Virginia.

About This Site

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) supports the creation and maintenance of GTFS for many transit agencies in Virginia. Several other transit agencies maintain GTFS outside of this effort. This website contains download information for services with public GTFS in Virginia.

This portal serves as a centralized resource for developers, transportation researchers, planners, and the general public to discover and access standardized transit data from across the Commonwealth.
